As someone who has had a loved one suffer from a severe brain injury, I am only too aware that on top of the extreme heartache and stress - we seem to be fighting a constant battle to secure suitable care and rehabilitation.
There is a shocking lack of support for those who had suffered severe brain injuries - which can range from traumatic injuries from devastating accidents such as car crashes or falls and acquired brain injuries which can have many causes including encephalitis, meningitis, strokes, heart attacks and many more.
Thanks to advances in modern medicine, people are surviving accidents and illnesses that they may not have done 20 years ago. However, the support for these people hasn’t evolved. They are almost a taboo subject. eMany of these people go on to make improvements, however these improvements do not come overnight. They often take years and years - but that hope does exist and is a very real possibility today. So where is the care, the rehabilitation, the time and funding to support this?
The Brain Injury Group has started a petition that is demanding more funding. I am asking you to please sign this petition. You will be signing it not just for people like Manny - who so desperately need excellent long term care, rehabilitation and support, but also for people like me. The families. For it is us who are the voices struggling to be heard on our loved ones behalf.
Please also spread this petition as far as you can. For it to go up in front of Parliament, it needs 100,000 signatures. That is a huge number and we will require YOUR support to get it there. It’s only a few minutes of your time to show your support for those of us who live this life - full time.
